The Democratic Republic of Congo has deported a suspect accused of taking part in the 1994 Rwanda genocide, handing the man over to a UN-backed tribunal based in Tanzania.
Gregoire Ndahimana was mayor of the Rwandan town of Kivumu when some 2,000 ethnic Tutsis were killed when the church they were hiding in was bulldozed. Ndahimana fled Rwanda shortly after the genocide and took refuge in eastern DR Congo but he was arrested last month during an operation against Rwandan rebels.
The decision to hand Ndahimana over to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda is seen as a strong sign that the two countries are working together after years of mistrust. Both countries have struggled to suppress rebel activity and each have blamed the other for supporting the groups.
