NFL Week 2 Scores: Mark Sanchez Bests Tom Brady as NY Jets Beat New England Patriots in AFC East

Mark Sanchez was 14/22 passing for 163 yards and a touchdown, Jerricho Cotchery had four receptions for 87 yards and Jay Feely kicked three field goals as the New York Jets (2-0) picked up a big AFC East victory on Sunday, dropping Tom Brady and the New England Patriots (1-1) 16-9.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter but it was the Patriots who owned the only points of the frame as Stephen Gostkowski gave New England a 3-0 lead. Gostkowski pushed that advantage to 6-0 when he was good from 25-yards out. The Jets cut their deficit in half when Jay Feely kicked a 33-yard field goal but Gostkowski answered for the Pats with his third field goal of the game, a 29-yarder, and New England went into the half with a 9-3 advantage.

The Jets offense came out in the third quarter with a sense of urgency and Sanchez quickly marched them down the field and when he found Dustin Keller on a 9-yard touchdown pass New York claimed their first lead of the game at 10-9. Feely would extend that lead to 13-9 later in the frame with a 24-yard field goal. Feely would cap the scoring for the Jets in the fourth when he was good from 39-yards out to provide the seven-point cushion.

New England’s offense could do nothing against the Jets defense as Brady struggled throughout the day to find open receivers and the Patriots were hit with a number of drive-killing penalties. Brady finished 23/47 for just 216 yards and an interception.
