NFL Week 2 Scores: Matt Ryan Keeps Atlanta Falcons Flying High, Top Carolina Panthers in NFC South Battle

Matt Ryan was 21/27 passing for 220 yards and three touchdowns, Michael Turner added 105 yards rushing and a TD and Tony Gonzalez finished with seven receptions for 71 yards and a score as the Atlanta Falcons (2-0) held off the Carolina Panthers (0-2) 28-20 on Sunday.

Carolina put the first points of the game on the board in the opening quarter with a Jon Kasay 38-yard field goal but Atlanta would answer as Ryan hooked up with Gonzalez on a 24-yard touchdown pass to put the Falcons in front 7-3. The Panthers reclaimed the lead early in the second after DeAngelo Williams scored on a 3-yard run but Ryan would answer once again, hitting Jason Snelling on a 10-yard TD toss to move Atlanta back in front 14-10. Kasay cut the Panthers deficit to 14-13 when he kicked a 50-yard field goal with 1:49 left in the half but a solid kickoff return for Atlanta set up a 7-yard touchdown pass from Ryan to Roddy White and the Falcons had a 21-13 lead at the break.

Neither team could produce points in the third quarter but Michael Turner provided Atlanta with a 28-13 cushion early in the fourth when he scored on a one-yard run. Jake Delhomme brought the Panthers back to within 28-20 when he found Dante Rosario on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 6:45 left in the game but the Falcons defense kept Carolina in check the rest of the way to seal the game.
