Ousted Honduran Leader Manuel Zelaya Says He’s Back in Country, Government Denies Report

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya has said he has returned to the country, telling a local television station “I am here in Tegucigalpa,” yet interim President Roberto Micheletti has denied that claim saying the former leader is actually “in a hotel suite in Nicaragua.”

It has been nearly three months since the military ousted Zelaya from office, sending him to Costa Rica in a late night coup. Zelaya has attempted to return on a number of occasions but has been blocked on each attempt.

On Monday Zelaya told Channel 36 television “"I cannot give details, but I'm here.” He went on to say that he intended to restore democracy to the country and called for further dialogue to resolve the political crisis that has gripped Honduras since his removal on June 28.

Micheletti, who has been acting as de facto president, addressed Zelaya’s claims with reporters saying his return was “not true.”

Zelaya was overthrown, with the support of the country’s Supreme Court, after it was determined he was preparing to change the constitution so that he could remain in office beyond his term limit. While several countries have called for his return to office the current government of Honduras has refused and warned Zelaya would be arrested if he were to return.
