Peyton Manning was 14/23 passing for 303 yards and two touchdowns, Dallas Clark had seven receptions for 183 yards and a pair of TDs and the Indianapolis Colts (2-0) defense managed to stop a late Miami Dolphins (0-2) drive with an interception in the endzone to preserve a 27-23 victory on Monday night.
Manning couldn’t have started any hotter as he hit Clark on the game’s first play from scrimmage and the Colts wide receiver went 80 yards for a touchdown. That quick strike was answered by the Dolphins as they ate up more than six minutes of the clock before Ronnie Brown scored on a 14-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.
Miami would string together another long drive extending into the second quarter, eating up another seven minutes before Dan Carpenter kicked a 45-yard field goal to give the Dolphins a 10-7 advantage. Adam Vinatieri countered the Carpenter field goal with a 43-yarder to equal the score. The two kickers would trade field goals again to end the first half tied 13-13.
Neither team could score in the third quarter but the Dolphins late drive in the frame led to a 3-yard touchdown run from Brown early in the fourth, giving Miami a seven-point lead. Once again Indy responded and Donald Brown scored his first career NFL touchdown on a 15-yard run to even the score at 20-20.
The Dolphins offense continued to eat up the clock and put together long drives and Carpenter capped a six minute drive with a 45-yard field goal with just under four minutes left on the clock to give Miami a 23-20 lead. Manning seemed unfazed as he once again used a quick strike to answer for the Colts, hitting Pierre Garcon on a 48-yard touchdown pass less than 30 seconds after the Dolphins score.
Needing a touchdown to win the game Chad Pennington had one more shot but his final toss into the endzone was intercepted by Antoine Bethea and the Colts got the win.
Miami completely dominated the time of possession, holding a 30 minute advantage over Indianapolis, yet the Dolphins offense had to settle for three field goals in the game when drives stalled.
