50s Pop Star Patti Page Dies

50s pop star Patti Page has died. Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, where Page lived, confirms the 85-year-old passed away on New Year’s Day. The cause of death is unclear.

Page began her career in the late 40s, but did not emerge as a pop star until 1950 when her single “With My Eyes Wide Open, I’m Dreaming” became a hit. One of her biggest hits, “Tennesse Waltz,” came the following year and sold 10 million copies. Page’s other popular songs include “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window,” “Old Cape Cod,” “Cross Over The Bridge,” “Mockin’ Bird Hill” and “Allegheny Moon.” Page won a Grammy Award in 1999 for a 1997 recording of a Carnegie Hall concert. Although her success in the music industry faded over time, Page continued performing into her 70s.

Page also saw success in television. She hosted CBS’ Music Hall in 1952 and The Patti Page Show on NBC in 1956. In the 60s, Page took on film roles in “Elmer Gantry,” “Dondi” and “Boys’ Night Out.”

The singer was married twice – her first marriage to Hollywood choreographer Charles O'Curran lasted from 1956 to 1972. She was then married to aerospace engineer Jerry Filiciotto from 1990 to his death in 2009. She is survived by her two children and several grandchildren.
