Subaru has issued a recall due to a possible fire hazard related to lights in car doors. The recall affects nearly 634,000 vehicles in the United States. Recalled models include 2009 to 2012 Forester SUVs, 2006 to 2012 Tribeca SUVs, 2010 and 2011 Legacy sedans, 2010 to 2011 Outback vehicles.
The problem lies with “puddle lights” under doors that shine light on the ground when the doors are opened. Subaru says smoke or a fire may be caused if the light or wiring is exposed to “electrolytic moisture," like water containing road salt.
“There have been no incidents of injury or accidents,” said Subaru spokesman Mike McHale.
McHale said there has been “less than 10” documented reports of smoke, and no reports of fire.
Of the 633,842 vehicles recalled, only 53,999 are believed to have the potentially hazardous puddle lights. Since the lights were installed by dealerships, Subaru has no accurate records about which vehicles have them.
