Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for the immediate reinstatement of ousted Honduran leader Manuel Zelaya and warned those in attendance, “Without political will, we will see more coups.”
Zelaya was ousted during a military coup on June 28 but returned to Honduras on Monday after several attempts to reenter the country failed. Since his return to Honduras Zelaya has been holed up in the Brazilian embassy; a building that has been surrounded by Honduran soldiers.
Brazil has already warned those soldiers not to storm the embassy and has called on the UN Security Council to take action in the matter.
Prior to his return on Monday the interim government of Honduras, led by President Roberto Micheletti, warned Zelaya that he would be taken into custody if he came back.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva assured Zelaya that he had the backing of the several countries, addressing the situation Wednesday stating, “The international community demands that Mr Zelaya immediately return to the presidency of his country and must be alert to ensure the inviolability of Brazil's diplomatic mission in the capital of Honduras.”
Honduras has extended their curfew in the capital of Tegucigalpa, a curfew that has been in place since Zelaya returned on Monday.
