The Jeffersons Actor Ned Wertimer Dies At 89

Ned Wertimer, a character actor best known for his role as doorman Ralph on The Jeffersons, has passed away at the age of 89. Wertimer’s manager confirms the actor died on Wednesday, January 2 at a nursing home near Los Angeles. He had been in bad health since falling in his Burbank home in November. No other details on his death were released.

Wertimer began his acting career after serving in World War II as a pilot. He performed on Broadway in the late 40s and landed his first TV role in 1950 on Rocky King, Detective. Wertimer went on to accumulate more than 100 TV credits, appearing on popular shows like Get Smart, Hogan’s Heroes, That Girl, Gunsmoke, I Dream of Jeannie, Mary Tyler Moore, Starsky and Hutch, and Mork and Mindy. His last TV role was on a 2002 episode of The Practice. Wertimer also appeared in several films, including Mame, The Pack and 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

The actor is survived by his wife Skyne, as well as a sister-in-law, three nephews and a niece.
