Katherine Webb Defends ESPN Announcer Brent Musberger

College football fans may have taken offense to ESPN announcer Brent Musberger’s comments about the girlfriend of University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, but the focus of Musberger’s appreciation did not. Former Miss Alabama Katherine Webb told Today’s Matt Lauer that she had no problem with Musberger calling her beautiful during Monday night’s BCS Championship football game.

"I think the media has been really unfair to him. I think if he had said something along the line if we were hot or sexy, I think that would be a little bit different," she explained. "The fact that he said we were beautiful and gorgeous, I don't think any woman wouldn't be flattered by that. I appreciate it, but at the same time I don't think I needed an apology."

Fans thought Musberger, 73, went too far. Many took to Twitter calling him “creepy” and “gross.”

"Now when you are a quarterback at Alabama, you see that lovely lady there, she does go to Auburn, I want to admit that, but she's also Miss Alabama and that's AJ McCarron's girlfriend, OK," Musburger said as the camera found Webb in the stands. "Wow, I'm telling you, quarterbacks -- you get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman. Wow! Whoa!"

ESPN apologized for Musburger’s comments. "We always try to capture interesting storylines, and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far. Brent understands that," tweeted ESPN vice president of communications Mike Soltys.
