The College Football Hall of Fame will be moving from its home in South Bend, Indiana to Atlanta, Georgia after officials with the hall opted to terminate its agreement with the city.
The National Football Foundation, which operated the hall, told South Bend Mayor Stephen Luecke about the decision on Tuesday. The agreement was to run through 2010 but Luecke said on Wednesday he would consider closing the doors prior to the date.
Opened in 1995 near the Notre Dame campus, the College Football Hall of Fame attracted about 115,000 people in its first year but that dropped to about half that number in the years that followed. That drop in attendance is seen as the main reason for the move.
An announcement concerning the new location in Atlanta is expected on Thursday but it is believed it will be located near Centennial Olympic Park which is in close proximity to several other attractions.
