Tiger Woods Captures Third Straight Buick Invitational
Entering the final round of the Buick Invitational Tiger Woods was trailing by two shots, by the end he won the PGA Tour Event by two. It was not only his third straight Buick Invitation win it was also marked the seventh straight PGA Tour win, an accomplishment bettered by only one man, Byron Nelson.
The way Woods played on Sunday Nelson’s record 11 straight PGA Tour wins could be in jeopardy.
Woods finished the day with a 6-under 66 to capture his 55th career victory.
Sunday began with two rookies co-existing atop the leaderboard. Brandt Snedeker and Andrew Buckle were two shots ahead of Woods and each aiming for their first PGA Tour win. Both stumbled to open the way for Tigers three-peat.
Snedeker played well, but not well enough. He finished with a 1-under 71 on the day and took third at Torrey Pines. He was unable to match the magic that he displayed on the tournament’s first day when he shot a 61.
For Buckle the day turned a on the back nine. He was still atop the leaderboard by two shots when he teed up at the 12th. What ensued was a disaster and only ended when he managed to tap in for a double-bogey.
As quickly as Woods was rid of two challengers a new one emerged. Charles Howell III ran a string of three birdies in four holes and had an opportunity to force Woods into a playoff but his 50-foot eagle put on 18th hole was played too high.
Woods began his unbelievable streak of seven straight PGA Tour Event victories at the British Open last July. Since that time he has been nearly unstoppable.
