SAG Awards Handed out to Oscar Favorites

The annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out on Sunday and many of the recipients are expected to be picking up Oscars when the Academy Awards are presented in February.

As was the case with the Golden Globes, Helen Mirren was presented with the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in “The Queen.”

Forest Whitaker was able to duplicate his Golden Globe award with a SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for “The Last King of Scotland.”

“Dreamgirls” co-stars Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy each won a SAG award in their nominated category, Hudson for supporting actress and Murphy for supporting actor.

In a bit of a surprise the overshadowed “Little Miss Sunshine” took the honors for best ensemble on Sunday. While it was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Picture, the low-budget “Little Miss Sunshine” is not expected to topple “The Departed,” “Babel,” “The Queen,” or “Letters from Iwo Jima.”

Mirren was again called to the podium for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for her role in “Elizabeth I.” Her co-star, Jeremy Irons, was also presented an award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries.
