Barbaro, Kentucky Derby Winner, Euthanized

After months of trying to stabilize a worsening condition, owner’s of the great race horse Barbaro elected to euthanize the Kentucky Derby winner on Monday morning after complications arose once again.

On Saturday two steel pins were inserted through Barbaro’s cannon bone in his right hind foot. It was believed to be a last ditch effort in bringing the horse some relief after shattering his right hind foot at the Preakness last May.

It has been an ongoing effort to nurse Barbaro back to health. His left hind leg was afflicted by laminitis after his right hind leg was unable to support his weight. It was feared that laminitis would spread to his front hooves, making it impossible for him to even stand.

Co-owner Roy Jackson said of the decision to euthanize Barbaro, “It was the right decision; it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time.”
