Chapel Hill, NC – Through years of dedication and extensive knowledge, Dr. William L. Barney has become a staple of the educational system at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Barney has spent the majority of his career as a professor in the UNC department of history. His focus of study is in 19th Century U.S. history, more specifically the time of secession and the Civil War.
Dr. Barney’s own educational background impressively includes earning his Master’s degree and his PhD both from Columbia University. Driven by immense passion and fascination with the political and economic climate leading up to and during the Civil War, Dr. Barney has shared his wisdom with students at UNC since 1975.
Along with establishing himself as a well-respected professor, Dr. Barney has authored and co-authored numerous historical works and textbooks. His works have been featured and studied in schools across the country. In The Making of a Confederate, Dr. Barney chronicles the life, inner struggle, and complexity of a Southern white man born into a slaveholding family in North Carolina through the time of secession, Civil War, and post-Civil War America. Featured themes include the cause of the Confederate identity and how some couldn’t let go of this identity after the war.
