Helicos BioSciences Corporation (Nasdaq: HLCS) $2.43. Today announced the publication of a landmark study in which Helicos’ True Single Molecule Sequencing (tSMS) technology was used to directly sequence individual molecules of RNA. The paper appeared yesterday in the on-line edition of Nature and will appear in an upcoming 2009 print issue of Nature.

 

The study consists of the accurate sequencing and quantitation of RNA molecules obtained directly from a biological sample without amplification, ligation or cDNA synthesis.

Vical Incorporated (Nasdaq: VICL) $4.22. Today announced the presentation of encouraging results from animal studies of a peptide-based cancer vaccine formulated with the company's Vaxfectin(R) adjuvant. Sean M. Sullivan, Ph.D., Vical's Executive Director of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is presenting data at the IIRUSA Vaccines Development Forum demonstrating the adjuvant's ability to enhance immune responses of cancer antigen-based vaccines in addition to a broad variety of DNA- and protein-based vaccines against infectious diseases.

 

Results from a mouse study demonstrated an 88-fold increase in antigen-specific CD8+ T-cell responses at low doses and a 45-fold increase at high doses with a Vaxfectin(R)-formulated peptide-based cancer vaccine compared with unformulated vaccine.

KVH Industries (Nasdaq: KVHI) $9.69. Today announced that it has received a new $2.1 million order for its precision fiber optic gyros (FOGs) for use in remote stabilized weapon stations (RWS) from a major defense contractor. Shipment of KVH FOGs for this order is expected to be completed in early 2010.

 

"KVH's fiber optic gyros are playing a critical role in the successful use of remote weapon stations to improve the safety of U.S. and allied warfighters as well as increase their efficiency and effectiveness in the field," said Jay Napoli, KVH's vice president of FOG and OEM sales. "Thanks to their use in remote weapon stations as well as a growing number of commercial applications for guidance, navigation, and stabilization, our fiber optic gyros are an increasingly valuable element of KVH's overall business strategy."
