Pregnant Woman Gets Pregnant Again, Called Superfetation

A pregnant Arkansas woman surprised doctors when they discovered she was pregnant again. The rare condition is called superfetation, which means conceiving while pregnant.

Todd and Julia Grovenberg learned they were expecting a second child during a routine ultrasound in June. Doctors located the couple’s first child, a baby girl, and then discovered another younger fetus growing beside her.

Doctors believe the Grovenberg’s conceived the babies two-and-a-half weeks apart. "When the woman had her ultrasound initially, they saw one sack, one baby developing, and that baby had a certain gestational age; then they noticed a second heartbeat in a child that was much, much younger developmentally," Dr. Karen Boyle told ABC News' Good Morning America Health. "It does really sound like this is a true case of different conception times for these children.”

The difference between superfetation and identical or fraternal twins is in ovulation and fertilization. Fraternal twins occur when a woman ovulates twice at the same time and the two eggs are fertilized by separate sperm. Identical twins occurs when one egg is fertilized and splits in to two during the multi-staged embryo period. In the Grovenberg’s case, one egg was fertilized during one ovulation cycle and then another egg was fertilized during another ovulation cycle two-and-a-half weeks later, putting the babies at two different gestational ages.

According to their due dates, the baby girl will be born in December 2009 and the second baby, a boy, will be born in January 2010.
