Tylenol Issues Voluntary Recall of Children’s Products

Tylenol manufacturer McNeil Consumer and Specialty Pharmaceuticals has issued a voluntary recall of 2009 children’s products. The recall information is posted on the Customer Care Center on the Tylenol Web site.

The recall includes Children’s Tylenol Meltaways 80 mg packages in bottles and blisters, Children’s Tylenol SoftChews 80 mg packages in blisters and Junior Tylenol Meltaways 160 mg packaged in blisters.

NY Pediatricians Dr. Seth Gordon says the recall was issued because “examination of bulk raw material detected that one of the inactive ingredients contained gram-negative bacteria Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia). The portion of raw material in which the bacteria was found was isolated and was not used in the production of any finished product.”

The recall was also issued due to the blister package design and dosage instructions. The company says the instructions and packaging may be confusing and lead to improper dosing, including over-dosing.

McNeil states that the recall is only a “warehouse recall” and store owners have already been notified to pull the drug from their shelves.
