Geiger will remain chairman, while President Mindy Meads and Chief Operating Officer Thomas Johnson will become co-CEOs. Chief Financial Officer Michael Cunningham will fill the president's role while finance chief. No successor was named to Mr. Johnson was operating chief.

The changes come as Aeropostale has taken advantage of tightened consumer spending to take customers from higher-priced competitors like Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE: ANF). Profit and sales have been rising at Aeropostale, in contrast to most other retailers, according to Wall Street Journal.

Meads has been president and merchandising chief since 2007. Johnson has been operating chief since 2004.
