The interim government in Honduras has lifted a curfew that has been in place since Monday, the day ousted President Manuel Zelaya returned to the country.
While Zelaya has remained holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa the streets of the capital city have reopened for business and the airports are once again in operation.
Zelaya was ousted nearly three months ago after the military stormed his residence and forced him out of the country. He has made several attempts to reenter the country but each time has been turned away. His surprising return on Monday led the interim government, headed by Roberto Micheletti, to impose the curfew due to fears of violent protests.
Several countries have called for Zelaya to be reinstated yet the interim government has refused those calls, saying the ousted leader was trying to change the country’s constitution so that he could remain in office.
