There is no such thing as a typical online home-based business owner.
We come in all age groups -- from teens trying to save money for college to grandmothers supplementing their Social Security check and everything else in between. Our reasons for starting our businesses are as varied as we are. However, all successful owners of a thriving online business share some common traits, without which we would never have made it.
As successful entrepreneurs we are motivated, determined, self-confident, and resourceful.
To illustrate these points I will pull from my own personal experiences.
Motivation
The cost of living in Northern Virginia is extremely high and it takes two incomes for a family to enjoy more than just the basic food clothing and shelter. Providing for two teenage boys is all the motivation I need to work toward succeess in my online business, http://www.ezincomefromhome.ws.
Determination
I learned determination from my father, a career Navy man who raised four children along with my stay-at-home mother. It was a different world then, and it was possible then for the wife to not work and tend to the home. My father was always determined to provide for us and retired from two other careers after he retired from the service. He knew what was needed and did what it took to it.
Self-confidence
Being self-confident was never an issue for me. When I first got involved with computers in 1993 I had enough confidence in myself to teach myself Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, and a variety of other programs. At the time I was doing in-home daycare so I could be with my own children and worked on the computer at night. Not once did I ever think I couldn't learn those programs on my own.
Resourcefulness
Once my boys reached school age I looked for another source of income and opened a home business selling jewelry. However, it required a lot of late nights so I looked around and found out I could make money with an online business. After trying a number of marketing programs that didn't produce the right results for me, I discovered my current online business.
My experience from a variety of "real" jobs I've held - from receptionist to office manager to real estate sales - along with the above mentioned traits, have easily translated over to my new career as an online business owner.
It's not been easy, but anything worth having never is.
