Companionship and enjoyment are two of the most popular reasons mentioned by people who participated in the survey.

Some people like animals for their independence and because they are easy to care for. This describes the respondents who felt that cats were the better choice. One participant said that they are good to have because, "they catch creepy crawly things." Some people have pets to keep other creatures away, like mice. Other good reasons to have one is summed up by participants who compare them to dogs, "They don't require walks, cleaning, or watching and they don't jump on you and bark at every sound."

Most of those who have animals agree that they add joy to their lives. Fish are described as tranquil and peaceful. Birds make very good friends, and horses are fun to ride. One participant said, "I do not have a pet, but if I had the time to take care of one, I would like to have a speaking parrot. It is because of its redundancy, it can repeat what I say or sing and I will see to it that the word's it learns are about the salvation that Jesus brings!"

When describing their pets, people often use words like, cuddly, soft, warm, sweet, loving, loyal, faithful, cute, affectionate, gentle, playful and obedient.
