Manson Family Member Susan Atkins Dies at 61

Former Manson family member Susan Atkins has died. Atkins died Thursday night in a California prison after a battle with brain cancer. She was 61.

Atkins was denied parole earlier this month. She had sought parole on passionate grounds.

Atkins helped Charles Manson and his followers commit a series of nine murders, including the brutal murders of Sharon Tate, Steven Parent, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski and Abigail Folger.

She had been incarcerated since October 1969 and is the longest-serving female inmate in the California penal system. Atkins was denied parole 13 times.
