U.S. President Barack Obama has accused Iran of concealing a second nuclear facility; one that he said poses a “direct challenge to the basic compact” of the non-proliferation resolutions put in place by the United Nations.
Obama addressed the matter on Friday during the G20 summit, declaring Iran must begin adhering to the standards associated with international commitments regarding nuclear facilities. According to reports Iran notified the UN watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Monday that they had been developing a second plant but it was not operational at the time. Iran insisted that the second plant was for energy purposes and not to develop nuclear weapons.
Obama insisted that Iran only notified the UN about the second nuclear facility after learning that the facility had been discovered by other countries. The U.S. President went on to challenge Iran’s assertion that the plant was for peaceful purposes, noting the facility was “not consistent” with that plan.
Joining Obama in demanding UN inspectors be given immediate access to the plant were French President Nicolas Sarkozy and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The leaders warned that Iran would face tougher sanctions if they did not comply with the demands, serving to further alienate the country.
