A terror suspect is in custody after attempting to bomb
Fountain Place Skyscraper in Dallas, Texas. The FBI arrested 19-year-old Hosam
Maher Husein Smadi Thursday after the Jordanian tried to set off an explosive
attached to a vehicle parked at the base of the 60-story building.
Authorities discovered Smadi because of his violent
rants posted on an extremist chat site. "Smadi was discovered by the FBI
within an online group of extremists," court documents say. "Among
many others in the group who espoused and endorsed violence, Smadi stood out,
based on his vehement intention to actually conduct terror attacks in the
United States."
Smadi initially picked the Dallas-Fort Worth airport
before deciding on the skyscraper because it houses Wells Fargo Bank.
Undercover officers contacted Smadi posing as members of an al Qaeda sleeper
cell. After months of conversations with Smadi, the officers provided him with
a fake bomb.
Smadi, who entered the U.S. illegally, cased the bank in
July and told an undercover agent he would bomb the bank on September 11. He
then decided to wait until the Islamic holy month of Ramadan ended on September
20.
Smadi took the fake explosive and a car into a parking
garage under the skyscraper and attempted to detonate the bomb by dialing his
cell phone. When he dialed, it called a phone in authorities’ possession and
Smadi was arrested.
He is charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction,
which carries a potential life sentence and a $250,000 fine.
