A car pulling out in front of you, your children acting up, work deadlines… what do you say we talk about a topic we can ALL relate to-- STRESS!
Some of us bite our nails, some of us twist our hair, and some of us turn to food. Well, believe it or not even if you have short nails and a bald spot-- there are at least some foods you can eat that can actually reduce stress! The Balancing Act welcomes their resident health expert and formulator of Chews4Health, Dr. David Friedman. We’re teaming up to help take some of that stress away, one food group at a time. Tune in September 28th on Lifetime Television at 7:30 a.m. (Eastern/Pacific—check your local listings).
Dr. Friedman says, “There are internal factors that determine your body's ability to respond to and deal with stress. This includes, nutrition, emotional well-being, and even the amount of sleep you get each night! When you're stressed, the body secretes more of a hormone called Cortisol-- also known as the stress hormone. cortisol increases food cravings especially for sweets and high fat foods."
Friedman adds, “Stress doesn’t just lead to hormonal imbalances, but it can actually lead to many diseases ranging from asthma to arthritis. It can even lead to death!”
Dr. Friedman suggests taking action by eating stress fighting foods—like fish! Try saying that fast 3-times! No, don’t. That would be stressful! High on the doctors list is salmon and tuna. These help keep your cortisol levels in check.
For snacks, try to stay away from heavy sugar and carbs-- like potato chips. How about going a little nuts instead? Try some almonds or pistachios! Almonds have stress relieving vitamins, and pistachios can help lower your blood pressure.
There’s so much to cover-- fish, nuts, meats, fruits and vegetables. We’ve only touched on a few—for the rest you’ll have to check out The Balancing Act with guest Dr.Friedman.
