The Indianapolis Colts arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on Monday after taking an extra day to relax with family. From now until Monday morning, relaxing might be the last thing on the list of things to do for Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Tony Dungy and the rest of the Colts.
While the Chicago Bears arrived on Sunday and acclimated themselves to the 70 degree weather and media frenzy, the Colts got their taste of what’s to come on Monday. Just an hour after arriving Dungy was answering questions surrounding his team’s chances of a second Super Bowl title, and first in Indianapolis.
Questions about Peyton Manning’s injured thumb are sure to take center stage when the Colts quarterback faces media day on Tuesday. Despite his track-record of durability many people have questioned his ability to lead the Colts after injuring his thump in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots.
Indy will try to eliminate the distractions of the media concentrate on the task at hand, beating the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Their first practice in Florida is scheduled for Wednesday.
For the Colts to take the Lombardi Trophy back to Indianapolis they may have to figure out how to stop Thomas Jones. The Chicago back has rushed for four touchdowns in two playoff games and has taken the pressure off quarterback Rex Grossman.
Of course Indianapolis hasn’t had a problem stopping featured backs in the postseason. After being the only team in the NFL to allow a 100-yard rusher in each of their 16 regular season games, the Colts defense allowed a combined 136 yards to Larry Johnson (32), Jamal Lewis (53), and Corey Dillon (48).
If the Colts can force Rex Grossman to throw they could erase their 36-year lapse in Super Bowl titles. Indianapolis established the second ranked passing defense in the AFC this year. Chicago’s passing offense was ranked eighth in the NFC and Grossman was the 13th ranked passing quarterback.
Indianapolis is currently a seven point favorite against Chicago.
