Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has met with at least two relatives of the victims of the 1988 Pan Am flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, offering his condolences in what was described as a cordial gathering at U.N. Mission to the United Nations in New York.
According to a report from the AP one of the relatives attending the meeting, Lisa Gibson, described Gaddafi as “very friendly and cordial.” Gibson said that during the meeting Gaddafi said “he was sorry for the loss, but we didn't go into any details.”
Gaddafi has been criticized for his country’s reaction to the release of Abdelbasset Ali al-Megrahi, the lone man convicted in the bombing which killed 270 people. Al-Megrahi was released from prison in Scotland on compassionate grounds due to terminal prostate cancer and when he was returned to Libya he received a hero’s welcome.
Libya has already formally accepted responsibility for the Pan Am 103 bombing and has paid reparations to the victims’ relatives.
Gaddafi was in New York to attend the UN General Assembly.
