College Football AP Top 25 Rankings Week 4: Florida, Texas and Alabama Remain in Place while Mississippi, Penn State and California Tumble

While every team wants to climb in the AP Top 25 rankings they may want to think twice about cracking the Top 10 as a fresh list of casualties from week four has lifted several teams into their place while the Florida Gators, Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide remain the only schools holding firm to their spots atop the rankings.

While the Gators, Longhorns and Crimson Tide remain one, two and three in the AP Top 25 the rest of the Top 10 looks completely different. Following Mississippi’s loss to South Carolina on Thursday night the Rebels tumbled from #4 down to #21. That game was just a sign of what was to come on Saturday as Penn State lost their #5 ranking after falling to Iowa, dropping them down to #15 in the week four AP Top 25.

The California was a fashionable pick to run through the regular season and have a legitimate shot at the national championship the Golden Bears tossed that away on Saturday after getting hammered by Oregon and saw their ranking drop 18 spots down to #24.

Everybody was talking about how the Miami Hurricanes had returned to national prominence after winning their first two games but their #9 ranking may have been a bit lofty as they got trounced by Virginia Tech on Saturday and fell to #17 this week.

For all the schools that fell there were plenty ready to take their spot and the LSU Tigers used a narrow victory over Mississippi State to jump from #7 to #4 in the rankings, giving the SEC three of the top four teams for the second straight week. The Boise State Broncos continued to position themselves for a BCS bowl as they moved up three spots to #5 this week and the same could be said for the Virginia Tech Hokies who used their win over Miami to jump five spots to #6.

USC continues to shake off disappointing losses and follows them with wins that impress the voters, rising five spots in the rankings to #7.

The biggest reward of the week went to the Iowa Hawkeyes who went from unranked to #13 this week after stunning Penn State on the road. Joining the Hawkeyes as pleasant surprises to the early AP Top 25 rankings are the Cincinnati Bearcats who are now at #10, TCU moved up four spots to #11 and the Houston Cougars continued their push for BCS recognition and now sit at #12.
