Iran has successfully test-fired a pair of long-range missiles capable of reaching Israel as well as U.S. bases in the Gulf.
The tests of the Shabab-3 and Sajjil rockets were carried out by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and immediately drew the condemnation of other countries. Just last week it was revealed that Iran was building a second uranium enrichment program, a program that many believe is further evidence the country is pursuing nuclear weapons.
Iran defended the test-firing, saying they were part of an annual military drill known as Sacred Defense Week, an activity instituted to observe their war with Iraq in the 1980s. The country’s foreign ministry spokesman, Hassan Qashqavi, insisted the tests were not a detraction from their pursuit of “peaceful nuclear technology.”
That “peaceful nuclear technology” has been called into question and Iran will likely face numerous questions surrounding their nuclear program on Thursday when they meet with members of the UN Security Council.
Leaders from the Britain, France and the United States have already threatened further sanctions against Iran while Russia has called for restraint, seeking further discussions with Iran before any future sanctions are imposed.
