In an effort to rebound from last month’s devastating loss in the country’s elections Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party has elected Sadakazu Tanigaki as its new leader, replacing former Prime Minister Taro Aso who stepped down from his leadership position within the party following last month’s loss.
The LDP saw its firm grip on the country’s political landscape smashed when the Democratic Party of Japan capitalized on the financial crisis and promised more programs for families, easily capturing the country’s leadership.
Now Tanigaki, a former finance minister, will concentrate on reuniting the LDP. The party now stands in opposition for just the second time in 50 years and faces a number of questions surrounding how it can attract a new generation of voters.
