Honduran troops have raided a pair of media outlets that have openly criticized the country’s interim government, shutting down the organizations shortly after declaring a state of emergency.
Radio Globo and Cholusat Sur TV were both shut down as part of the state of emergency as several civil liberties have been suspended for 45 days. According to a decree issued by the interim government unannounced public meetings were to be banned and news media would be temporarily closed down.
Honduras has been in a political crisis since June 28 when then President Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a coup and forced out of the country. The interim government accused Zelaya of attempting to change the country’s constitution so that he could remain in office, a charge that Zelaya denied.
Several countries have called on the interim government, led by Roberto Micheletti, to restore Zelaya to office yet those calls have gone ignored. The government issued a warning to Zelaya, saying any attempt to return to the country would lead to his arrest but last Monday he managed to sneak back into Honduras and has remained holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa.
Soldiers and riot police immediately surrounded the embassy but have not made a move on the building. Brazil has already warned those soldiers that the embassy was protected by international law and could not be breached by the troops.
On Sunday the interim government demanded Brazil define Zelaya’s status within ten days, saying their diplomatic credentials would be revoked if they didn’t grant him asylum or turn him over to Honduran authorities.
