President Barack Obama has made plans to travel to Denmark later this week to lobby for Chicago’s 2016 Summer Olympics bid.
Obama is expected to leave on Thursday and make a personal appearance before the International Olympic Committee where he will try to sway the committee. The president will be joining his wife, Michelle, who is heading up the U.S. delegation along with several other bid organizers.
The White House released a statement on Monday concerning the president’s newly scheduled trip saying both Barack and Michelle will make presentations to the committee and “discuss why Chicago is best to host the 2016 Summer Games, and how the United States is eager to bring the world together to celebrate the ideals of the Olympic movement.”
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley also released a statement on Monday expressing enthusiasm over the president’s upcoming trip, saying “President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama symbolize the hope, opportunity and inspiration that makes Chicago great, and we are honored to have two of our city's most accomplished residents leading our delegation in Copenhagen.”
While Obama has long lobbied for Chicago as an Olympic host there are many calling into question his decision to fly to Denmark while there are still concerns over health care, growing trouble with Iran and its nuclear ambitions and the growing level of violence in Afghanistan.
Chicago is facing competition from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo with the decision to be made after the 115 voting members of the IOC cast their ballots on October 2, 2009.
