Lucy Vodden, Inspiration Behind Beatles Song, Dies at 46

Lucy Vodden, the woman who inspired the Beatles classic Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, has died. Vodden passed away last Tuesday after a battle with the autoimmune disease Lupus. She was 46.

Vodden became the inspiration for the song after Julian Lennon, the son of Beatles singer John Lennon, drew a picture of her at school. Julian told his father the picture was of “Lucy in the sky with diamonds.” Lennon took the idea and made it into a song, which many fans feel is an allusion to LSD. The song is featured on the Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Julian Lennon and his mother Cynthia were support of Vodden throughout her fight with Lupus. The pair are “shocked and saddened by the loss of Lucy and their thoughts are with her husband and family today and always,” according to a statement.
