Hours after announcing that civil liberties would be suspended for up to 45 days due to the unrest caused by ousted leader Manuel Zelaya, the interim government in Honduras has agreed to restore those rights and reopen two media organizations within ten days.
Interim leader Roberto Micheletti spoke on Monday afternoon, saying he wanted to “ask the Honduran people for forgiveness” and promised to resolve the situation by the end of the week. Michelleti also promised to reopen the two media outlets that were raided by troops and suddenly closed.
In addition to restoring civil liberties and reopening Radio Globo and Cholusat Sur TV, Micheletti once again vowed not to attack the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. Zelaya has been holed up in the embassy since last Monday, the day he snuck back into the country, despite warnings from the interim government that he would be arrested upon return.
Honduran soldiers and riot police have surrounded the Brazilian embassy but have yet to make a move on the building. Brazil has already warned those soldiers that the embassy was protected by international law and could not be breached by the troops.
