At least 240 people have been confirmed dead and nearly 400,000 left homeless in the Philippines following massive flooding caused by Tropical Storm Ketsana.
That death toll has more than doubled since initial reports and that number could continue to rise as rescue efforts continue in remote areas. Already more than 90 deaths have been recorded in the capital city of Manila and several more people remain missing.
The government has appealed for foreign aid and humanitarian assistance to help in the recovery process.
Left devastated by Saturday’s early morning storm, many people are now struggling to acquire the basic necessities including water and shelter. That has become the focus of the relief operations, turning from a rescue effort to delivering supplies to those who survived.
More than 450,000 have been displaced by the flooding and President Gloria Arroyo has already said she would make available any building to accommodate those needing assistance.
