Felix Jones carried the ball eight times for 94 yards, Tashard Choice rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys (2-1) defense forced three turnovers to overcome a slow start and knock off the Carolina Panthers (0-3) 21-7 on Monday Night Football.
Both offenses struggled throughout the first half but the Panthers finally broke through with 1:03 left in the second quarter when Jake Delhomme found Dante Rosario on a 25-yard touchdown strike and Carolina carried a 7-0 advantage into halftime.
Dallas managed to put their first points of the game up early in the third quarter when Nick Folk kicked a 24-yard field goal and five minutes later Choice crossed the goal line on a 5-yard run up the middle to give the Cowboys a 10-7 lead.
Folk extended that lead to 13-7 in the third minute of the final frame when his 19-yard field goal split the uprights. While the Panthers offense stalled on their next drive the Carolina defense forced the Cowboys to punt, giving Delhomme one more shot at leading the team down the field. Unfortunately for Carolina it didn’t work out as Delhomme was picked off by Terrence Newman and he went 27 yards for a touchdown to seal that game at 21-7 after a two-point conversion.
The Cowboys defense limited the Panthers to just 1-8 on third down conversions and held Carolina to a paltry 73 yards on the ground.
