Tsunami Warnings Have New Zealand, Hawaii on Alert, Earthquake Off American Samoa Elevated to 8.3-Magnitude

An 8.3-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of American Samoa has produced a tsunami that sent water more than 100 yards inland but there have been no reports of structural damage to buildings or injuries.

The massive quake, which struck about 120 miles southwest of the island, has produced tsunami warnings for several Pacific islands including New Zealand and Hawaii.

Early reports placed the quake at a 7.9-magnitude but that has been elevated and there have been a number of aftershocks since the initial earthquake.
