ChristiaNet.com (http://www.christianet.com), the world's largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, gave readers an opportunity to take part in a poll answering the question, "Should Christians participate in Halloween?" An overwhelming majority of 181 out of 266 felt that it wasn't appropriate for God's children to take part in a holiday that is Pagan. The overall consensus is that it is a holiday that encourages evil behavior. One participant made a very good point by commenting, "Although it has its origins in the Catholic Church it has resulted in a corruption of what initially was a Catholic day of observance in honor of the saints." (http://www.christianet.com/bible/)
Several respondents bring up the importance of understanding the history of all holidays that we observe. The children of Israel took part in celebrations of the Lord, such as the Passover Feast, and the Feast of Tabernacles. God gives warnings to those who take part in pagan rituals and promote witchcraft and the occult. Is it proper for Christians to wear Halloween costumes that promote evil characters? One participant wrote, "It's an evil holiday, because it has to do with scaring the bad spirits while dressing up as witches and so on."
Forty-seven of the respondents who took part in the poll felt that Christians should participate in Halloween. Some commented that dressing up in Halloween costumes is okay as long as the costumes aren't of evil characters. Some suggestions suitable for dressing up included angels, clowns, animals, nurses, doctors, and Bible characters. Most of the comments from this grouped polled felt that it was okay to participate but not to do it as promoting witchcraft or evil behavior.
The last group polled, were unsure as to whether a Christian should celebrate Halloween or wear Halloween costumes. Some participants felt that the attitude of the one celebrating is the most important thing. One voter said, "Although I don't think Christians should participate in the evil associated with Halloween, I see nothing wrong in participating in the fun things associated with the day." If this holiday is indeed a time to promote evil, witchcraft, and the dead, then every Christian should give it some prayerful thought before taking part. Many Christians today have their own kind of celebration and still get to have some treats and fun. For more information, visit: http://christianblogs.christianet.com/
