The 7-foot-9, 370-pound mammoth that is Sun Ming Ming has signed with the Maryland Nighthawks of the American Basketball Association.
Ming is hoping to use his stay in the ABA as a conduit into the NBA much like Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Rick Berry, George Gervin, and Dan Issel once did.
While the 23-year-old Chinese star certainly has the body for the NBA, his ability to respond to the daily grind of NBA life are yet to be determined. But that has dissuaded the man being called the tallest man in professional basketball history. When asked about his goals Sun said “I hope I make the NBA some day.”
Ming will wear number 79 and play in the middle for the Maryland Nighthawks, but must first get back into shape after recovering from a pair of operations for a pituitary tumor.
The Nighthawks will debut Ming on Saturday but how much he will play is still up in the air.
