Massive Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesian Island of Sumatra, Thousands Buried Under Rubble, Several Confirmed Dead

A massive 7.9-magnitude earthquake has struck about 30 miles off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, burying thousands of people under fallen buildings and leaving at least 13 people confirmed dead.

 

Several hotels, buildings and bridges in Padang have been destroyed and communication to the city of 900,000 people has been cut.

 

While the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch following the quake that has since been lifted.

 

The quake was felt in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta as well as Singapore and Malaysia and has caused panic throughout the area. In 2004 a tsunami devastated the region, killing more than 230,000 people.
