Kenya’s recently appointed anti-corruption chief Aaron Ringera has resigned from his position following protests from several members of parliament who objected to his appointment.
Just weeks ago Ringera had been reappointed to the position of heading up the Kenyan Anti-Corruption Commission by President Mwai Kibaki. Ringera had already served a five-year term when Kibaki, without consulting MPs, reappointed him to a second term.
That move angered several MPs who protested the appointment, declaring it illegal and refusing to accept it. The decision not to back the appointment is seen more as an attack on Kibaki who has done little to tackle the problem of corruption in the country.
Ringera opted to resign rather than draw out the criticism, saying his decision was in the best interest of the country.
