Shannon Briggs, Two-Time Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Ready for Evander Holyfield, Discusses Return to Ring in Interview with WooEB.com

Shannon Briggs, two-time heavyweight boxing champion, is planning a return to the ring and in a recent interview with Peter Tosto of WooEB.com “The Cannon” gave some insight into the direction he has taken to unify the belts and become the one true champion.

Briggs said he was “recharged and refocused” after a two-year absence from the ring and that he hoped to have a title shot by 2010. The path to that title shot didn’t exactly intimidate the 37-year-old Briggs as he said the heavyweight division lacked a “dominant guy” and the current champions were merely “belt holders.”

Explaining that contention Briggs referred to Mohammad Ai, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and George Foreman as true champions, the boxers that unified the belts whereas the heavyweight division today has a mix of champions with Wladimir Klitschko holding the IBF, IBO and WBO belts, his brother Vitali Klitschko holding the WBC belt and Nikolay Valuev holding the WBA belt.

Briggs took a shot at Vitali Klitschko’s latest performance in the ring, a tenth round TKO of Chris Arreola on August 26, telling WooEB “I wasn’t impressed.”

When Tosto questioned about former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and the prospect of fighting the 46-year-old Briggs perked up, saying “I would love that.” Briggs quickly offered that there was no love lost between himself and Holyfield, stating they have had “a couple run-ins outside the ring” and facing him inside the ring would be welcomed.
