Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, already serving prison sentences for a number of charges, has received another six year sentence for charges of corruption.
Fujimori admitted to illegally wire tapping the phones of journalists, businessmen and politicians while serving as president from 1990 to 2000. In 2000 Fujimori fled Peru for Japan after videos depicting acts of corruption brought down his government.
The 71-year-old lived in exile for seven years before being detained while visiting Chile in 2005. He was eventually extradited to Peru in 2007 to face charges. That led to four trials in which he was convicted of a number of charges including ordering his security forces to carry out killings and kidnappings. That charge brought with it a 25-year sentence while he has also been sentenced for abuse of power as well as embezzlement.
