The death toll from Wednesday’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of the Indonesia island of Sumatra has reached 75 people and that figure is expected to climb significantly as rescue workers continue to dig through the rubble of fallen buildings.
Thousands of people are believed to be trapped under those buildings as the island was rocked by the tremor that came just hours after a quake off the coast of American Samoa triggered a tsunami that killed more than 100 people.
The Sumatra earthquake led the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami watch but that has since been lifted.
Now the concentration has turned to finding survivors but several areas of the island have been cut off as roads have been blocked and communication has been lost.
In Padang, a city that was left devastated by the quake, at least two hospitals collapsed as did a number of hotels and schools leading government officials to warn the death toll will be significantly higher than the 75 being reported.
