Cleveland Indians Fire Manager Eric Wedge, Will Remain with Team for Rest of Season

The Cleveland Indians have fired manager Eric Wedge after a dismal season that has left the club 28 games under .500 and just one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central with six games left.

Despite getting the axe Wedge will remain in the dugout through the rest of the season.

Wedge was named the 2007 AL Manager of the Year when he led the Indians to the postseason but fell a win short of reaching the World Series. Cleveland followed up their success of 2007 with a mediocre 2008 that saw them finish 81-81 and the collapse of 2009 was too much for the organization to accept.

Now the Indians will turn their attention to 2010 and there has already been talk that Mike Hargrove could return to the club. Hargrove led the Tribe to five consecutive AL Central Division titles in 1995–99, and World Series appearances in 1995 and 1997.
