Gap Inc. Co-Founder, Donald G. Fisher Dies at 81

Gap Inc.'s (NYSE: GPS),Donald G. Fisher, co-founder of Gap Inc., has died after a battle with cancer at the age of 81. The retail guru has often been credited with inventing the specialty retail category. Mr. Fisher opened his first Gap store 40 years ago last month. He has been a resident of San Francisco throughout his life. He was also well known for his commitment to philanthropic and civic activities.

Mr. and Mrs. Fisher founded Gap Inc. on August 21, 1969, after a bad experience with exchanging a pair of jeans that did not fit. That same year the Fishers raised $63,000 to launch The Gap in San Francisco.
