Personal Security and Identity Theft Expert Says One out of Three Is Bad When it Comes to the Recovery of Stolen Laptops

(BOSTON, Mass. – Feb. 2, 2007 - IDTheftSecurity.com) Research has determined that the vast majority of laptop computers lost either to negligence or theft are never recovered by their owners. While a major U.S. corporation seemingly bore out these statistics by announcing the recovery of only one of three laptops it lost last year, Robert Siciliano, a widely televised and quoted personal security and identity theft expert, issued a reminder that GPS tracking can put most lost laptop computers back in owners' hands.

"One out of three is bad," said Siciliano. "Any organization that loses its laptop computers must be able to recover them, and if it can't, anyone whose information might be on the lost machines is left at risk of becoming the next victim of identity theft or related crimes. It's that simple, and the solution is just as simple: equip all laptop computers with GPS tracking and other recovery technologies."

Siciliano, president of IDTheftSecurity.com, leads Fortune 500 companies and their clients in workshops that explore consumer education solutions for data security issues. The Privacy Learning Institute has featured Siciliano, a longtime speaker on identity theft. Author of "The Safety Minute: 01," Siciliano has discussed identity theft and data security on CNBC, on NBC's "Today Show," FOX News, and elsewhere.

On Jan. 27, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Boeing Co. had recovered a laptop computer lost to theft in December 2006 that contained personal data on 382,000 workers and retirees; two other Boeing-owned laptops lost last year remain at large.

Symantec has estimated that just 3 percent of computers lost to theft are recovered. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reported that losses due to laptop theft totaled more than $6.7 million dollars in 2005.

Siciliano urged organizations seeking a way to recover lost laptops to consider MyLaptopGPS™. Recently mentioned on Law.com and consumeraffairs.com, this product from the company of the same name combines Internet-based GPS tracking, which is more affordable and user-friendly than other types of GPS tracking, with encryption and additional technologies to put laptop owners' minds at ease when theft occurs.

MyLaptopGPS™'s software silently retrieves, and then deletes, files from machines as it tracks the hardware—at once returning the data to its rightful owner and removing it from the stolen computer. Users can call on all MyLaptopGPS's functions remotely.

"With widespread use of our software," said Dan Yost, chief technology officer at MyLaptopGPS, "stories of companies losing their laptop computers wouldn't even be news—sparing all involved the grief of the spotlight, not to mention keeping from thieves the sensitive information stored on these machines. Our Internet-based GPS tracking technology enables owners of mobile computers to find their lost machines if criminals strike."
