Second Earthquake Hits Samoan Islands

Another earthquake rocked the Samoan Islands Wednesday, a day after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake generated a tsunami that killed more than 130 people in the area.

The second quake, a 5.5 magnitude, occurred at 6:13 p.m. Wednesday evening. The epicenter was located 121 miles from the city of Apia, Samoa and was about 6 miles deep in the Pacific Ocean. It did not trigger a tsunami warning.

At least 139 people are confirmed dead from Tuesday’s devastating earthquake and tsunami. The dead include 22 people in American Samoa, 110 in Samoa and 7 in Tonga.

Rescue workers are still digging through rubble in the Samoan islands and officials say the death toll could rise.

Meanwhile in the Philippines, residents are bracing for a second typhoon. The island nation was batted by Typhoon Katsana over the weekend and is now preparing for Super Typoon Parma to hit on Saturday. Katsana left at least 246 people dead and much of the nation’s capital, Manila, underwater. Parma is expected to bring heavy rainfall and leave major damage to the already damaged area.
