A terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey on Friday killed one person and wounded another. Neither of the victims were Americans; officials said the man who died was a Turkish security guard and the woman who was injured is a well-known local journalist.
According to U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber at a checkpoint near an entrance to the embassy. The explosion occurred at 1:13 p.m. local time. The inside of the compound was not damaged. "We are working closely with the Turkish national police to make a full assessment of the damage and the casualties, and to begin an investigation. We will share more information as it becomes available."
The Embassy released a statement thanking the Turkish government and the public “for their expressions of solidarity and outrage over the incident."
U.S. officials have not confirmed reports from Turkish media outlets that claim a Marxist extremist group was behind the explosion. The attack comes over four months after the deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Four Americans, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, were killed.
